16TH CLASS - GROUPS 01 AND 02 - TAKE OUR TEENS TO WORK DAY PREPARATION

Today:
1) You prepared for your first job shadow...
a - You wrote a letter to the person you are going with including a thank you, 5 goals for the day, and making her/him aware that you need to set time aside during the day for questions
b - You copied out a checklist of things to make sure you have done before, during, and after the day
c - We read through the question sheet you will ask the person you are with.
2) Group 01, there was time to play a game where we went over answers from the assignment from last class.
If you missed class: You must see me on Monday to catch up. I need to read your letter before it is passed along.

14TH CLASS - GROUPS 01 AND 02 - WORKPLACE SAFETY, HUMAN RIGHTS AND ISMS, AND COMMISSION DES NORMES DU TRAVAIL AU QUEBEC (LABOR BOARD OF QUEBEC)

Yesterday:

GROUP 01
1) We reviewed your "isms" responses.
2) You chose to discuss the issues as a whole class by volunteering.
3) You created 10 strategies in small groups to combat the "isms" then shared them with the whole class.
4) We went to the computer lab and everyone surfed the Commission des normes du Travail website.
If you missed class: See your "go-to" person to catch up on the discussion, and visit the above website because...
Next class Wednesday, October 28 (Day 8): There will be a test on the website. You will be able to use the website, but make sure you understand how it is organized and where things are.

GROUP 02
1) We watched the Government of Canada video, Are You in Danger?
2) We reviwed your rights and responsibilities: To Know, To Participate, and To Refuse Work.
3) We had a whole-class discussion answering different ethical questions you raised that have or can happen in the workplace.
If you missed class: See your "go-to" person about the discussion and me before next class.
Next class Monday, October 26 (Day 6): Try to visit the Commission des normes du Travail website and get to know how it is organized. Look up content that is of interest to you.

13TH CLASS - GROUP 01 - WORKPLACE SAFETY REVIEW AND HUMAN RIGHTS IN THE WORKPLACE

Today:
1) Take Our Teens To Work Day permission slips were due and collected.
2) We reviewed the 3 rights and responsibilities of workers - to know, to participate, and to refuse work. We reviewed the responsibilities of employers.
3) We discussed your Human Rights in the workplace. We started focusing on common causes where your rights are not respected: the "isms".
4) You individually completed a handout on several "isms" - racism, sexism, classism, ableism, heterosexism, and ageism - to assess your prior knowledge and experiences.
5) You shared the answers you were comfortable sharing with your partner.
6) You were also asked to write effective strategies you have used or would like to use to combat the "isms".

10 CLASS - GROUPS 01 AND 02 - SEAN AIKEN REFLECTION, TOTTWD, WORKPLACE SAFETY

MAKE SURE YOU ONLY READ THE POST FOR YOUR GROUP (YOUR SCHEDULE... POP 304-01 = GROUP 01, POP 304-02 = GROUP 02)
Group 01
Today:
1) You completed the Sean Aiken presentation assignment (point form is fine):
a - 10 things you liked or found interesting
b - 3 things you wanted to know more about, questioned, or wished was different.
2) You picked your best answer from a and b and voiced it to your peers. Awesome ideas! I will send the feedback to Sean for him to consider for next year. We then discussed the purpose of the presentation in relation to POP.
3) We began considering Workplace Safety:
a - you were broken into 1 of 5 groups; each group represented 1 of the 5 career families
b - you chose a workplace environment realistic in your career family
c - you were put in role as employers responsible for the safety of your employees
d - you came up with 10 possible health/safety risks and
e - 10 possible rules to combat those risks, then
d - produced a skit involving all group members modeling how you would convince your employees to follow those rules to ensure their safety.
If you missed class: See me ASAP.
Next class Wednesday, October 14 (Day 8): You will be given some time to practice and will then present.

Group 02
Today:
1) You did the exact same thing as the group above. Read #1 and #2.
2) We discussed Take Our Teens To Work Day. You now have 3 very important documents to share with your parents/guardians. They are due October 21.
If you missed class: See me ASAP.
Next class Thursday, October 8 (Day 6): We will begin Work Safety.

1) There was a homework check for both of your careercruising assignments.
2) We discussed three Take Our Teens To Work Day documents for your parents/guardians: the letter, information pamphlet, and questions to answer on Wednesday, November 4. The permission form (last page of information pamphlet) is due by Wednesday, October 21.
3) You handed in your binders.
